Valentina Tereshkova’s space suit

During Valentina Tereshkova’s space trip she was required to wear a specialised space suit for her solo mission. She wore an orange main space suit which was plain with no patches or marks with the only identifier being the letter “CCCP” (USSR). Whilst the underneath layer seen to the right of the exterior suit below, was made from a sky blue fabric and was hidden from view. This suit acted as a thermal garment and had a large emblem embodied on the left shoulder to signify the world’s first space mission patch. The suit is said to be an orange/red colour as it was the colour of the USSR flag whilst also allowing the suit to be visible to the recovery team.

The photo below shows Valentina in her complete suit ready for her space mission. The Ron age suit is seen to be a nylon type fabric complete with brass zip and pockets on either side. In this image we can also see Valentina’s helmet which has the marking which was mentioned above. When thinking about my designs for my character it’s important i include those small details such as the writing on the helmet as this was one of only few details which could really tell Valentina from the rest of space missions.

To develop this further I will complete a range of sketches inspired by different visual references I have found fo Tereshkova’s suit including both interior and exterior outfits.
