One Day Brief Part One- 25th January 2021

As part of our new project Visual Application, we were required to complete three one day brief's set by different guest illustrators. The first briefed we were set was "How to Prepare a Favourite meal' by David Lyttleton.

The idea of the brief was to create either a single or series of illustrations that communicate the steps needed to create a favourite meal. This could be done using text or just images. Firstly when tackling this brief I began by mind mapping all my ideas so far, with details such as who this favourite meal belongs to? what is this favourite meal? And how I will show this.

Above shows my first sketchbook page, in which I show may digitally created mind map which is also surrounded by a range of examples I sourced of Pinterest. It was especially helpful to look for this visual inspiration as it allowed me to look art how style and colour could effect my piece to make it more appealing sonf maybe add a narrative elements.

Once I finish the initial process I stuck to the two ideas of my grandma's Jam Tart recipe and Mrs Rabbit's Veggioe stew. I liked these two ideas as I wanted to create a character to base the recipe around. Once developing these ideas I began creating thumbnails as seen below.

Both thumbnail design were completed using black Indian ink to show thew strong contrast of the line work and the shapes I wanted to create of the characters. I liked both these designs and felt they could have both been developed in some way. However, I decided to focus on Mrs Rabbit, I liked the idea ofd creating this fictional character and her environment whilst finding inspiration from betray potter and her tales ion Peter Rabbit.

Above shows the more focused thumbnails I went onto create as I looked at style when art came to capturing the ingredients as well as general layout off the finalised illustration. IU chose to go with this layout as I liked the centre being focused on mrs Rabbit and her cooking whilst the outside simple surrounded her with the step by step instructions. I felt this looked effective, and with the use of ingredients going round in a clockwise motion irt allowed the viewers eyes to be cast over the whole drawing looking at the individual details of the illustration.

From here I then scanned my sketches, so I can begin to work on the lifework digitally. To do this I used procreate and my apple pencil to help get precise lines. I chose rot work on the lifework first as its allowed me to create a finalised idea for my illustration.

Above shows this line work, swell as version in which I begin to introduce colour, this is not the finalised style that I was aiming for however, I wanted to add the colour as a plan to show where my ideas are heading.

Finally I used the lifework to create my finished piece. I chose to work digitally as it allowed me to have that freedom with experimentation. However, after receiving feedback it may have been nice to playa round with the watercolour and ink for my final piece like I did in my thumbnail drawings of the vegetables. My favourite part of this drawing would be the colour palette I feel it has that soft natural feel that would the expected when creating a rabbit's environment. However if I was to change anything I would rethink the look on the leaves that border the outside as they look to digital and blended and doesn't fit with the simplicity of the marks in the middle.

Overall I feel this was successful for my first one day brief, there were defiantly elements I would now change and adapt after reviewing however I loved the narrative and vibe I created with this illustration.
