Story Board task
As part of our Visual Application project we are to create a finalised story board showing an event in our given character's life. But what is a story board?
A story board is a range of multiple illustrations sequenced together to pre visualise the animation or film scene. The story board plays an Important part when it comes to thinking about details such as action breakdown, camera angles and dialogue.
Above shows an example of a finished professional storyboard created by professionals at Disney for the animation Moana. In this scene we see the main protagonist, Moana come facets face with an enemy who intends to step in her path whilst on her journey. In this story board we see that the illustrations have a sketch style to them with elements being left unfinished, this is something that is seen often within story boards, as there is no need for finished refined illustrations, as the detail is added later on when it comes to refining the animation. In this piece above we see that it is very monochrome with only the hint of yellow being seen in three panels. This single use of colour is to draw the attention and show the reason behind he scene as Moana intends to reach the hook on Tamatoa's back.
I feel this is an effective example of a story board as it shows the key elements and ideas that must be included, asleep as showing interesting angles and frames that will help keep the audience intrigued and following thew action of the story.
Moving forward from here in preparation for creating our own story boards, we were given a task to create a story board based on a word or feeling that we had to communicate using our illustrations. For my storyboard I was given the word 'moist'.
After thinking about how this word could be used I chose to apply it to the idea of weather. Therefore in my story board, we see my character walking through the park before being caught in a warm rain shower. This was a quick task with us being required to do it in under half an hour, therefore for the illustrations, it was important for us to stick to thumbnail sketches that will allow us to help communicate our ideas quickly.
I was happy with these sketches and felt thy communicated my ideas, my particular favourite panel included the shot of the shoes showing the puddles beneath her feel and the rain on her wellies, If I was rot develop it further I would liker to have focus on the socks and how the rain as caused the moist uncomfortable she is feeling. If I was also aiming to improve my story board I would break up the first three frames as they look very similar and instead include a frame focusing on the rain falling onto the hand. This would add a more interesting viewpoint and therefore engage the viewer further.
Therefore moving forward, when it comers to cresting may final story board linking to Valentina Tereshkova I will make sure too focus on the viewpoints and how this could really tell the story in an interesting way.
