The final part of my Visual Application project was to create a folded format inspired by my historical Character, Valentina Tereshkova. For my folded format i wanted to really show the life story of Valentina and how she progressed through life to get to her to her journey to space.
Above shows my final illustration panels for the inside of my concertina book, each panel shows Valentina through her life from when she was a child to her moments in space. I wanted each panel to be full of colour and texture so it would attract my targeted audience and draw the reader into my book. I was happy with how each of these illustrations turned out and felt they communicated all the scenes that i wanted to show. I particularly love the launch scene as it has a different format the rest of the images and breaks up using a different composition.

Whilst above shows the outside of the book and shows both the front cover, the blurb and also blue print of the Rocket used by Valentina during her space mission. I wanted to add something visually simple added some more factual information yet didn’t take away from the overall story of the inside. I chose to stick to the dark teal colour as this is the traditional colour of the blue print and also fits with my front and back cover. I was happy with how this looked and felt it help the book perfectly an captured the viewers attention using on bright contrasting colours.

Once finishing my finalised illustrations i printed it out onto matte printer paper and stuck it on a large sheet of mount board that i scored and folded to create the concertina design that i intended to create. Above shows the final product of what I created and how i intended for the final product to look if it was printed professionally. I was happy with how this looked and felt it had the professional style that i wanted whilst also communicating all the facts and story of Valentina and her space travel.
If i was to improve on any elements i wold possibly look into different cards ab paper to see which worked for mounting on as i found when the board was bent into place it would tend to snap and not hold the overall film. However just for the mockup i feel it works, and show how i would like the product to stand.
Below i will show some photos i took during the process to show how i built my final piece.
After finishing my illustrations in procreate and photoshop by adding the text to add to the story line, began by printing the individual scenes onto an 18cm X 18cm format using photoshop to resize the image so the pixels weren’t stretched and therefore printed to the highest of quality. I was impressed with printing and was happy with the choice of paper i chose as the matte added a professional look and made the colours print very vibrantly.
Once printing the individual squares i trimmed them using an a4 cutter, to make sure the edges were straight and would sit next to each other neatly. I then glued these down using spray mount to ensure that they stuck down neatly without creasing. I particularly like using this product for final pieces as it helps give a professional look to the mockup making it as realistic as possible.
Overall I am really happy with how my final format look as i feel it really captures the ideas and the narrative that i chose to show throughout. I specifically liked the blurb that i created as i added barcode, price and even the penguin publishing logo so you can get a feel for what the book would look like in a realistic situation.
