One Day Brief Part 2-8th February 2021

The Second one day brief was set my Stephen Waterhouse and was based on the idea off music and how it could inspire us to create illustrations connected to the song.  The first part of thew day was to pick four songs from the list given to us and create a range of thumbnail sketches. These sketches could have been literal by using the lyrics of the song to create as narrative or it could have been more abstract by listening to the song and allowing our thoughts to Rome free. I chose to do the abstract elements as I felt this would allow me to really show my inner emotions towards the different songs.

Above shows ky four sketchbook pages inspired by the songs, "Fly me to the moon" by Frank Sinatra, "Yesterday" by The Beatles, "I'll keep you safe" by Sleeping at Last and "City of Stars" from the movie LaLaLand. I chose these four sponges was they each had individual meanings for myself and felt they could be turned into an illustration that shows my emotions that link join my own feelings for the songs.

In the images above you can see I took an abstract approach to the first part of the brief. Instead ion directly listening to the lyrics and the narrative within the song I wanted to listen to the beat and the melody and how this had been used to effect my emotions and movement. I felt his could be an interesting way to approach my starting point as these individual marks could b e used later on when the idea develops.

Once completing the first part of the brief we were ask to choose one off the songs from before and instead develop the ideas further. From the image above you can see my thumbnails for my idea for 'fly me to the moon'. I decided to choose fly me to the moon as in the initial process I loved the patterns and mark makings that I created and feel;t I could create some powerful illustrations incorporating them. Therefore to begin his process I began creating thumbnails listening to the lyrics and seeing how I could use these to create a narrative. For my final piece I chose to the work on the first two thumbnail sketches based on the idea of spring on mars and playing amongst the stars.

Above shows my two illustrations I created inspired by the lyrics from fly me to the moon. The idea of my illustrations to create a piece that really communicated the idea
of love and adoration within a relationship. I chose to a simple palette that had simplistic elements yet still would attract the viewer. To display these four key final I put them together in photoshop using a simple white page to create a border and frame both pieces. I wanted both to sit side by side to create a narrative which the viewer would instantly recognise.

Above shows my final design for the one day brief, for this i decided to add to the illustrations by including the specific lyrics that inspired the scene. I felt this gave more context to the drawing and therefore showed the meaning behind the creation of the pieces. Overall I was really happy with these p[ieces as if kelt they communicated the ideas that I intended and really poke for the romance of the song.
